When serving in a regional hospital that was the only hospital in a county, you experience wearing many hats. The beauty of administering in healthcare boils down to building relationships, internally and externally. The best way to advance an initiative that is a strategic business decision is by having a foundation of built relationships to accomplish the common goal.

The social determinants of health include the community benefit, education, vaccination, and how you take care of the greater community. But administrators need to think beyond that by being deeply rooted in their community. It comes down to embedding leaders and non-profits to engage with schools, churches, and neighborhood centers.

Take risk management and start to look at it through an interdisciplinary approach. When you look at it from the clinical side, it won’t work, and the same happens when you look ait from the non-clinical side. When you look at it from an interdisciplinary lens, you need to start by looking at the data, bringing different viewpoints, and creating a team, then think of your community partners.

You need to think about healthcare with a mindset that focuses on humans first. It’s not about the numbers or finance. It’s about taking the time to care about one and other. When focusing on developing healthcare programs for healthcare by healthcare, you need to bring together leaders from interdisciplinary lenses. Then you are ensuring that the certificate or degree programs you have created are developed with healthcare in mind.
