Balancing Innovations & Optimization

Do I think optimizing for 1-2% is more important than innovating to make quantum leaps?

Yes and no.

When we build the discipline of drilling down and maximizing all the opportunities:

- We often end up getting 10-20%, not just 1-2%.
- We learn the art of being a specialist, rather than a generalist jumping from one innovation to another.

At the same time, individuals need to learn to know when it’s time to stop optimizing and find the next big project.

But as situations change, I think it means sense to come back to projects to check:

- Have we gone back to a manual procedure?
- Are we following the processes?
- Can something be made better?

There needs to be a balance between the continuous improvement process and innovation.

Thoughts?
